A fatal accident that shut down a busy DeKalb interchange Saturday morning appears to have been caused by a driver running a red light, police said.
The crash investigation shut down Candler Rd. at I-20 from about 6:30-9 a.m.
According to the initial investigation, the driver of a Toyota Camry was exiting on the I-20 East ramp to Candler Rd. and ran the red light, DeKalb police spokeswoman Officer Elise Wells said. The Camry hit the front of the MARTA bus and was redirected across the intersection and into a guard rail. The MARTA bus hit the guard rail on the east side of the overpass.
The driver of the Camry was deceased at the scene, Wells said. The driver of the MARTA bus was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and no other bus passengers were hurt, Wells said.
DeKalb police did not release any details about the Camry driver’s identity.
All lanes of Candler Rd. have been reopened, Wells said.
