Five Fun Ways To Exercise Your Dog Outdoors

By Ellen Britt #woofpost-all

Exercise is essential for your dog’s health. And although indoor exercise is ok if there is no other choice, there is just no substitute for getting outside with your dog for some fresh air and sunshine.

One – Walking – This is probably the most common way to exercise your dog. Going for walks around your neighborhood or in a park or other area, is a great way to get your dog (and you!) moving.

Two – Hiking – The next time you go out for a hike, why not take your dog with you. Dogs love the great outdoors as much as humans and make great companions on the trail. Be sure to take a container of water and a portable water dish with you if clean water is not available along the trail.

Three – Swimming – This is a great activity for dogs who love the water, and most dogs do. Swimming is especially beneficial for dogs with joint problems as it does not require weight bearing. A dog life jacket is helpful and enables your dog to stay in the water longer.

Four – Draft Work – Many people have the mistaken impression that draft work, such as pulling a sled, is reserved for breeds such as Alaskan Malamutes or Siberian Huskies. The truth is that many dog breeds enjoy pulling, whether that’s a sled, cart or even skijoring.

Five – Fetch – Make fetch into a challenging game by changing out your dog’s ball for a Frisbee or one of her toys. Change the terrain by throwing the ball up a hill or out into water so there is a bit of work to get the ball or toy back.

These five ways to exercise your dog will provide plenty of variety for you, as well as your canine companion. Can’t get outside? Coming soon is our article on ways to bring exercise fun indoors.
