A 19-year-old is dead after he was shot by a police officer in Worth County on Saturday morning, authorities said.

Jakerion Shmoud Jackson was pronounced dead at a hospital following the shooting, officials said.

Few details have been released about the fatal shooting, but the incident began with an early morning traffic stop, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said in a statement.

A Sylvester police officer tried to pull someone over about 2:30 a.m., leading to a brief car chase, Miles said. That chase ended with the driver running away on foot and disappearing in an area along Franklin Street.

About three hours later, several 911 calls came in reporting “a suspicious person that matched the description of the subject from the earlier car chase,” Miles said. The “suspicious person” was reportedly in the same area where the person involved in the car chase was last seen.

A police officer went to the area and came across Jackson, Miles said.

“This encounter led to the officer discharging his firearm, resulting in Jackson being struck,” she said.

No other information was released on what led to the gunshots.

The GBI is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, Miles said.
