Light snow and chilly temperatures descended on some parts of Arizona early Monday morning, according to meteorologists.
Radar showed bands of rain and snow showers expected to affect southern Navajo and Apache counties Monday morning, according to a tweet from the National Weather Service in Flagstaff. Snow has been reported at Winslow, Holbrook and St. Johns.
The Weather Service warned travelers of slick roads as temps were in the low 30s. As of 9 a.m., the temperature was 25 degrees in Flagstaff.
The high temperature Monday in Flagstaff is forecast to be in the mid-30s, dropping into the teens at night.
Arizona Department of Transportation tweeted a warning to drivers shortly before 4 a.m. to watch for snow sticking to the roadway on Interstate 17, south of Flagstaff around mileposts 330-333.
Snow was also seen on State Route 377 north of Heber-Overgaard.
On Sunday night, the Weather Service reported storm cells moving across parts of northern Arizona as of 7:20 p.m. Snow showers and rain were expected to keep moving southeast into Monday.
“The front is headed our way across the state line with temps dropping near freezing on the Kaibab Plateau,” according to a tweet by the National Weather Service in Flagstaff.
In the Phoenix area, morning temperatures dropped into the 60s — a welcome relief after the hottest summer on record.
“This morning’s low so far has been 64°, and it may fall a couple more degrees this morning,” the Weather Service in Phoenix tweeted at 7:20 a.m.
The storm system didn’t bring much rain at all to the Valley on Sunday night. A slight chance remained for rain Monday morning in the Phoenix area with higher chances across Pinal and Gila counties.
The high temperature Monday in Phoenix is forecast to be in the upper 60s, with low nighttime temperatures dropping into the mid-40s.
On Tuesday, morning temperatures will drop again following the passage of the storm. Low to mid-40s are expected in Phoenix, and freezing temps are forecast across high terrain areas east of Phoenix, including the Globe and Miami area.
A freeze warning is in effect for Tuesday morning in Globe.
